New Restaurant Alert: The Hitching Post

Our very first review goes out to a lovely establishment known as The Hitching Post, located at 2747 Bernville Rd in Leesport PA. You can also find them online at www.thehitchingpostpa.com

My initial thoughts on this restaurant were good. We walked in, the hostess was very polite and accommodating to an older gentlemen who insisted on his normal table. We were seated and immediately appalled at the prices of the cuisine. Not wanting to spend $20 on a plate we sat staring at the menu in astonishment for a good 5 minutes. During this 5 minutes we were approaching 3 times by our overly zealous and seemingly bored waitress. On the 4th approach we finally ordered by default.

The food came out fast.

Good points:
*The food is DELICIOUS. I ordered a grilled Reuben with the side salad and it was very very good. Also very good was the oil and bread delivered Italian restaurant style before our meal.

(The Italian meal bread and oil was a bit confusing because 1. The restaurant is called The Hitching Post and 2. the menu is filled with Greek cuisine and we were told the owners were Greek and all the Greek food was homemade by them. I'll let Ms. S. touch on that point when she writes her review).

Bad Points:

* The joint has not changed besides wall color from it's days as The Chill Lounge, which is evident by the horribly stained carpet which was not replaced and obviously SHOULD have been during the "renovations."
* Within the course of our 1.5 hour sit down we were visited by our waitress at least 7 times, and by the hostess 2 times. It was not a relaxing evening with a friend chatting over dinner... It was annoying.
* The food was very over priced for what it was. I was charged $9 with tax for a Reuben sandwich, which is a little appalling.
* There was dried crusted food on our table and my menu - which didn't appear to be a big concern to anyone.
* It doesn't seem like anyone sat down and came up with a brand for this restaurant. The name denotes BBQ, the menu is all over the place, and the obvious strive is for the place to be elegant.

It seems like The Hitching Post is striving to be a fancy, overpriced go-to establishment in Berks County.  If this is their goal they have a LOT of work to do. Yes, their food was delicious. It was very very good. I will give them that. But the over-attentive staff and dirty "fancy" atmosphere isn't working. Especially at a place called "The Hitching Post." Really?

Ms. M: I give The Hitching Post 2 out of 5 high-fives. I had initially rated it a 3, until our waitress AND the hostess came to ask us if we were okay because we were chatting instead of immediately leaving when we were done with our meal.
